The Proposal

This is the story of how Jake popped the question to Bunny!

It was very important to me that Bunny be totally surprised when I proposed to her.  So I began laying the groundwork for my proposal months before the actual event by flat-out lying: I repeatedly insisted to Bunny that I was not ready to get married. (On a side note, I’m still paying for that, but it was totally worth it.)

After the Proposal

In May of this year I made a plan to go ring shopping with Bunny’s mother, Tammy, but the day before that happened, Bunny and Tammy were out shopping in Union Square and happened upon a ring. She fell in love with it immediately, so much so that she immediately called to tell me all about it. As I had been doing for a few months, I explained that I was not ready to get married, and I insisted that there would be other rings once the time was right. She was totally crushed. She continued to pester me about that ring for the next few weeks; unbeknownst to her, I had gone and bought it as soon as we had hung up the phone, and had it safely tucked away.

On June 25, the anniversary of our first date, I planned a special dinner for us. She knew that we were going to Foreign Cinema, her favorite restaurant, but I told her we were doing something special beforehand. That something special was a trip to Coit Tower, her favorite landmark. She had never actually been to Coit Tower before, so I took her to the top, and when we came down, I told her that there was a great spot behind the tower that I wanted to show her. I took her to the lawn behind the tower that overlooks San Francisco, the place we live and the place we fell in love, and I asked her to be my wife. She was completely shocked; even more so when I explained that the guy standing behind us was a photographer I had hired to capture the moment for us.  We followed up the proposal by doing a quick photo shoot in front of the tower, and then we were on our way to Foreign Cinema.

My new family!

As another surprise, I had invited her family to celebrate with us, and they (and a few members of my own family) were waiting for us at the restaurant. It was pride weekend, so of course we got stuck in traffic as we made our way across the city. Her father, not content to idle the minutes away, apparently spent the time telling everyone within earshot what was happening, because when we walked into Foreign Cinema, the whole place erupted in applause.  At that point, Bunny pretty much had a total meltdown; she could barely speak, and it took her a while to recognize her own mother. It was perfect.

We had an amazing dinner, and capped the evening off by spending a night at the Fairmont hotel, in a room with an incredible view of Coit Tower, where the whole thing had started. I couldn’t have asked for it to have gone any better.
